When is the best time to buy new sails?

Question: When is the best time to buy new sails? What type of sails should I use, dacron or laminate? I don't race, mostly daysail with an occasional overnight. However, performance is very important to me and I constantly adjust my sails to try to obtain the best performance. I also need sails that will last at least 5 years and preferrably 10. The boat is a 1986 Newport 28.

Answer: The best time to buy a sail is likely going to be when demand for such orders is low. There are some long, dark days for sailmakers in the fall and winter when much of the country looks to other pursuits and a number of lofts offer significant discounts on orders placed during this time frame. One loft we Googled offered 15% off for orders in October, tapering down to 10% in November, so the short answer to that question is that basically right now is the best time to place an order.

As far as what sail material you should use, if your current sails have seen more than their fair share of outings, new Dacron sails will probably fit the bill, especially in terms of longevity. They’ll be able to hold their own against laminates at least initially, but in terms of top notch performance, laminate sails are stronger, lighter, and faster--they just don’t last as long. A good compromise in terms of longevity and performance can be found in the cut of the sail. Consider checking out tri-radial construction, for less warp and for a sail that holds its shape AirForce Sails Quoter. I’d also recommend posting on the Newport list Newport Email List.
