The Oakland, CA store has closed -- absorbed by West Marine. For those who don't know -- West Marine is BoatUS....they bought them out some time ago. Look at their identical sales catalogs, even the same inventory numbers in some instances. Call one or the other for a part and if it's not in one's inventory, they'll refer you to the other company

The Boat US that is closest to us is much better than the West Marine. Boat US tends to cater to the Sailor and West Marine caters to the stinkpotters. Most of the staff at Boat US are knowledgeable on the products that they sell.

Although their inventory is not quite as good as West Marine, their prices are generally 20% lower. I always check there first and go to West as a last resort.

I've been with BoatUS for many years. Long ago I ordered two long lengths of lines for use as halyards and a matching splice kit to put eyes in the lines. After two failures to correctly make the eyes, it was evident that the splice kit didn't match the line type. BoatUS immediately determined the mismatch and delivered the correct kit, and also (surprisingly) included out two new lengths of line even though I had only lost two feet of length on each. More recently they were quite helpful when I re-outfitted my galley with a new propane stove/oven, offering to matching price (and better it,) and arranging to deliver to a remote store at a future point it time for my pickup. If I need a bolt, shackle, paint, etc, I'll go to my local West Marine or marine hardware...if I need some significant items I'll immediately pick up the phone and call BoatUS (or browse their website.) I've been very pleased.

My local BoatUS is just the opposite of my local West Marine. The BoatUS is staffed by teenagers who, while usually eager to help, really don't know much of anything. The West Marine, on the other hand, has knowldegable help.

It's just West Marine sailing under a different flag.

Not an outstanding inventory, but overall it has been very good. The best thing is the staff. Everyone there actually seems to know what they are talking about and has always been helpful. A direct contrast to the local West Marine which seems to rely on teenage summer help who know precious little.
